Description

When the Abyssal Trench vomits something onto the coast, a tide-twisted monstrosity, a fog that drives men mad, a wave of black water that leaves everything it touches changed, the Lantern-Keepers are the ones who run toward it.

Founded after a catastrophic Trench incursion destroyed three coastal towns, the Lantern-Keepers are part lighthouse-keepers, part monster-hunters, part paranormal investigators, and part last line of defense. They maintain a network of coastal watchtowers, patrol the shore, investigate anomalies, and fight what comes from the deep. For over a thousand years, they have been the Reach’s shield against the Trench.

Now that shield is cracking. The Black Tides are escalating. The Sleepwalker phenomenon is overwhelming their Whisper-Wardens. The Veil Unbound is sabotaging their operations. And the Concord of Tides is cutting their funding because a safer coastline is less profitable than a terrified one (frightened towns pay more for protection contracts with private merchant-house guards).

Keeper Lira Ashvane is the order’s commander, a thirty-something former Diver (underwater operative) who took the top job after her predecessor drowned in a Black Tide incident that should have been survivable. She is brilliant, charismatic, exhausted, and increasingly desperate. She knows something unprecedented is building in the Trench, and she doesn’t have the resources to stop it.

Structure

Military order based in Veil Harbor:

  • Keeper, Commander of the order (Lira Ashvane)
  • Watch Captains, Each oversees a section of coastline and its watchtowers
  • Lanterns, Full members. Standard coastal patrol and defense.
  • Wick-Bearers, Recruits in training

Specialist roles:

  • Divers, Underwater operatives who investigate submerged anomalies. Extremely dangerous work. High casualty rate.
  • Fog-Walkers, Scouts who patrol in conditions no sane person would enter. Specialize in navigation, survival, and recognizing Trench-born phenomena.
  • Whisper-Wardens, Handle the Sleepwalker phenomenon. Part therapist, part exorcist, part jailer. The most psychologically demanding role in the order.

Goals

  • Defend the coast from Trench-born threats, monsters, Black Tides, anomalous phenomena
  • Investigate and contain the Black Tide phenomenon, understand its pattern, its source, its purpose
  • Manage the Sleepwalker crisis, people along the coast are walking into the sea in their sleep, and the numbers are growing
  • Discover and stop the Veil Unbound, Ashvane knows someone is sabotaging her order, but hasn’t identified the cult yet
  • Ashvane personally: Find out what’s happening in the Trench before it’s too late. She has a gut feeling they’re running out of time.

Strengths

  • Experienced and dedicated. Every Lantern-Keeper has faced things that would break ordinary soldiers. They’re tough, resourceful, and deeply committed.
  • Specialized knowledge. No one else understands the coast’s threats as well as they do. Their archives contain centuries of observations.
  • Ashvane. She inspires fierce loyalty and makes good decisions under pressure. Her Divers would follow her into the Trench itself.
  • Coastal network. Their watchtowers provide early warning and coordination along the entire Reach coastline.

Weaknesses

  • Chronically underfunded. The Concord treats them as an afterthought. Equipment is aging, towers are undermanned, recruitment is down.
  • Stretched impossibly thin. Too many crises, too few people. Every deployment is a triage decision.
  • Attrition. They’re losing members, to death, to madness, to burnout, faster than they can recruit and train replacements.
  • No political power. Ashvane has no seat on the Concord, no wealthy patron, no leverage. She relies on the Tidekeepers’ goodwill, which is in short supply.

Hooks for Player Interaction

  • The campaign’s most likely starting patron. Ashvane hires capable freelancers because she can’t afford to be picky. PCs who prove themselves earn her trust and access to the order’s resources and information.
  • Quest Hub. The Lantern-Keepers have more problems than they can handle. Black Tide investigations, Sleepwalker cases, monster hunts, coastal patrols, there’s always work.
  • Ashvane as Mentor. For PCs in the Reach, Ashvane is the one who explains the stakes, provides context, and points them toward the truth.
  • The Trench. Eventually, someone has to go down there. The Lantern-Keepers are the only ones with the knowledge and equipment to make it possible.
