Thornhaven

Settlement motto

“One root, one canopy.”

Overview

Thornhaven is Kaelith Thornborn’s creation, a settlement built at the edge of Thyrea’s Cradle where no settlement should be possible. The deep Cradle does not permit clearing; the forest closes in on any gap within weeks. But Thornhaven sits in a clearing that the Cradle itself provided. The trees drew back, the undergrowth retreated, and a space of several acres opened like a held breath. Kaelith claims Thyrea made this space for them. The Greensingers, after thorough communion, confirm the clearing was not made by mortal hands. They disagree on what that means.

Population: ~12,000 and growing

The settlement is young, less than a decade old, and growing faster than any other community in the Marches. Clans that support Kaelith’s unification are sending families. Unaffiliated hunters and scouts arrive, drawn by the promise of something new. Even a handful of Dominion defectors have found their way here, people who crossed the Scarwall seeking a life that is not measured in caste and obedience.

Notable Locations

Kaelith’s Hall

The settlement’s centerpiece, a structure that was not built but grown. Greensinger magic coaxed the surrounding trees into shaping their branches and roots into walls, arches, and chambers. The Hall is alive. It breathes, a slow expansion and contraction of its wooden walls that visitors find either comforting or deeply unsettling. Leaves grow from the ceiling, filtering light into green-gold patterns on the floor. The air inside tastes of sap and something sweeter, almost like honey.

The Training Grounds

Thornhaven is the most militarily organized settlement in the Marches. Kaelith Thornborn has established formal training regimens, coordinated fighting techniques, signal systems, and supply logistics. The traditionalist clans see this as the Dominion’s language spoken with a Marcher accent. Draven Ironbark has been heard to say, “She’ll have us marching in lines next. And after that, she’ll have us kneeling.”

The Newcomers’ Quarter

A district for recent arrivals from across the Marches and beyond. Temporary shelters of woven vine and hide gradually replaced by more permanent structures as families settle. Dominion defectors cluster here, still adjusting to a world without walls, castes, or grey stone.

Key NPC

Kaelith Thornborn: Aspirant leader of the Verdant Marches. Tall, lean, mid-thirties, with sun-darkened skin and hair the color of wet bark. Her mark, traceries of green-gold light beneath her skin following her veins from left hand to shoulder and up the side of her neck, pulses faintly in the presence of heavy vegetation. She is charismatic, passionate, impatient, and trusts her instincts with a certainty that worries The Greensingers.

Politics

Four of twelve major clans have pledged to Kaelith. Three more lean her way. The rest are hostile, neutral, or watching. Thornhaven’s rapid growth and military organization are the primary points of contention. Supporters see necessary preparation for threats the Marches cannot face divided. Opponents see the first stones of a cage being laid.

The Marchwardens Council at Roothold has become a theater of escalating argument, with Kaelith and Draven Ironbark as the principal voices of opposing visions for the Marches’ future.

Adventure Hooks

Hooks for Thornhaven

  • The clearing’s edges are showing the first signs of corruption: shadow-growth, spiraling root patterns, leaves darkening at the margins. The Greensingers are alarmed.
  • A Dominion deserter arrived with information about Cinder activity near the Scarwall but may be a plant.
  • The Training Grounds’ increasing organization is making Draven Ironbark aggressive in opposition. He has called for a formal challenge to Kaelith’s authority at the next Moot.
