Lastlight
Population: ~5,000 Motto: “The last to look away.”
Overview
Built into a rocky ridge overlooking the Hollowdeep, Lastlight is the first and last defense against whatever emerges from the crater. It is not a settlement in any comfortable sense, it is a watchtower with a town attached, a military outpost where people happen to live because someone has to.
The Hold is constructed along the ridge’s reverse slope, invisible from the crater. Divine bone wards create a persistent barrier against necromantic energy, effective enough to make the Hold livable but not comfortable. The air on the ridge-side carries a permanent chill that warming fires cannot entirely defeat. Lastlight’s people have a pallor and thinness that comes not from malnutrition but from living at the edge of a death-zone.
The garrison rotates on six-month tours, and even those leave marks. Lastlight veterans have a distinctive look: hollowed cheeks, watchful eyes, and a habit of scanning every room they enter as if checking for exits. The traditional greeting is: “Welcome. You’ll hate it here. We all do. Stay.”
Notable Locations
The Ridge Posts
Observation positions arrayed along the ridgeline, each equipped with enchanted lenses crafted from Morrhaelite. Through these lenses, the Hollowdeep is not a grey haze but a landscape of dark energy flows, the bright-dark signatures of individual undead, and the vast pulsing glow of Morrhael’s skull at the center. The Watchers maintain round-the-clock surveillance from these posts, logging everything they observe.
The Watcher’s Archive
Decades of Hollowdeep observation logs stored in a climate-controlled vault beneath the ridge. The most valuable intelligence the Wastes possess. Early logs document shambling, purposeless movement. Recent entries are deeply alarming:
- Undead formations have shifted from random wandering to organized patrols
- Energy patterns suggest structures being built within the crater, walls, barriers, staging areas made from bone and frozen earth
- The skull’s energy signature has changed to something rhythmic, like a power source being actively used rather than passively radiating
- On three occasions in the past year, a single figure in Vigil armor has been observed standing on the crater rim, facing Lastlight, watching back
The Commons
A large communal hall at the Hold’s center where off-duty personnel gather for meals, arguments, games, and the deliberate maintenance of morale. Attendance is mandatory for anyone completing a ridge-post rotation. The Vigil learned decades ago that the psychological toll of watching the Hollowdeep requires active countermeasure. The Commons is that countermeasure: noise, warmth, human contact, enforced normalcy against the quiet outside.
Key NPC
Thessa Ironveil
Commander of the Ashen Vigil, based at Lastlight while she plans the largest expedition into the Hollowdeep in living memory. A tall, lean woman in her late forties with close-cropped grey hair and the flat, assessing gaze of someone who has spent too long looking at things no one should see. She speaks precisely, wastes nothing, and carries the weight of fifty-four missing scouts like a physical burden.
Ironveil knows the silence is wrong. She has read every log in the Archive. She has watched the formations through the Morrhaelite lenses herself. She is certain the Hollowdeep is preparing for war, and she is equally certain that no one outside the Wastes will believe her until the army is already marching. Her expedition is not exploration. It is reconnaissance before a battle she believes is inevitable.
Adventure Hooks
- The figure in Vigil armor has appeared on the crater rim again, and this time it raised one hand in a gesture that the Watchers recognized as Vigil field-sign for “hold position.” Someone dead is using living communication protocols.
- Energy pattern analysis suggests a massive structure being assembled around Morrhael’s skull. The Watchers cannot determine its purpose, but the power draw is enormous.
- Thessa Ironveil is recruiting for her expedition and needs people she can trust who are not already committed to Hold defense. Outsiders, adventurers, anyone with skills and the nerve to enter the crater.
- A Watcher on night rotation reported hearing a voice from the crater, clear and distinct across miles of dead air. It said a name. His name.
GM Only
The figure on the crater rim is Vigil Scout-Captain Edda Voss, one of the fifty-four lost. She is raised, intact, and serving as Serith’s eyes. She retains enough skill to use the Watcher observation posts’ sight-lines in reverse. Serith knows Lastlight’s defenses, garrison strength, and rotation schedule. When the army moves, Lastlight will have approximately six hours of warning, the time it takes for the horde to cross the crater floor. The voice the Watcher heard was Serith testing whether she can project speech through the death-domain. She can.
