Pale Sentry

“Ashes Endure Where Flesh Does Not.” , Fortress motto, painted on the inner walls where the garrison can see it every morning

Population: ~15,000 Role: Northern border fortress of The Ashen Dominion, watching The Pale Wastes

Overview

Pale Sentry squats on the Dominion’s northern border like a grey tooth in a broken jaw. It watches the domain of Morrath, God of Death, and its purpose is simple: keep the dead from walking south.

The fortress is smaller and grimmer than Cinderholm. Its walls are built from Ashite-reinforced stone, which the undead find difficult to approach, the residual divine order in the mineral disrupts the entropic energy that animates them. Beyond the walls, the landscape transitions from grey Ashfield soil to the bleached, frozen desolation of the Wastes. The wind from the north carries a smell like old iron and dust, and on quiet nights the garrison can hear sounds from across the border that they’d rather not describe.

Notable Locations

The Ashwall

Pale Sentry’s primary defense, a double curtain wall of Ashite-reinforced stone standing forty feet high. The Ashite content makes it glow faintly at night, a thin line of pale light against the northern dark. Undead approaching the wall slow, stumble, and often collapse before reaching it. The garrison still mans the battlements around the clock, because occasionally something comes that the Ashite doesn’t stop.

The Pyre Yard

An open courtyard behind the main gate where the remains of every undead incursion are burned with Ashite-kindled flame. The yard is blackened and scarred, the stone permanently discolored. The smell never quite leaves. New arrivals learn to breathe through their mouths.

The Vigil House

A small compound within the fortress maintained by the Ashen Vigil, the order that operates in the Pale Wastes themselves. The Vigil share intelligence about undead movements and occasionally request Dominion support. The relationship is uneasy. The Dominion considers the Vigil reckless. The Vigil considers the Dominion complacent.

The Penitent Barracks

Most of Pale Sentry’s garrison didn’t choose to be here. Assignment to the Northern Watch is the Dominion’s most common punishment posting, one step above imprisonment. The barracks house soldiers who angered the wrong officer, questioned the wrong doctrine, or simply drew a bad lot. Morale is maintained through rigid discipline and the sobering reality that the alternative to doing your job is being eaten by the dead.

The Memorial Wall

An interior wall engraved with the names of every soldier killed at Pale Sentry since its founding. It is nearly full. A section of blank stone has been prepared for future additions. The garrison calls it “the waiting room.”

Key NPCs

  • Warden Kael Ashford , Commander of Pale Sentry. A punishment posting that he turned into a vocation. Fifties, lean, hard, with the thousand-yard stare of a man who has fought the dead for two decades. Competent, respected by his troops, and completely ignored by Ostivaar.
  • Vigil Liaison Sera Vahn , The Ashen Vigil’s representative at the fortress. Thirties, quiet, haunted. She has been into the Wastes and come back, which puts her in a very small category of people. She has been requesting emergency support from the Dominion for months and being ignored.
  • Corporal Bren Malwick , A punishment-posted soldier who has become an unlikely leader among the enlisted. Sharp, bitter, funny in the way that people who face death regularly become funny. He keeps morale from crumbling through sheer force of personality.

Threats

The Hollow. Regular incursions of shambling undead that stumble south out of the Wastes every few months. The garrison puts them down with Ashite-tipped weapons and burns the remains. Routine, grim work.

The Undying. Occasionally, something worse, a creature of real intelligence and power. These engagements are costly. The last Undying incursion killed forty soldiers and breached the outer wall before it was put down.

Adventure Hooks

  • The Deserter’s Warning. A soldier fled south carrying a message: the Wastes’ dead are organizing. Forming ranks. Moving with coordination. At the center of the most recent incursion, she saw an undead figure wearing remnants of Ashen Flame armor, commanding the dead with gestures that looked exactly like Calculist spell-forms. The Cinders have classified her as a deserter and ordered her arrest.
  • The Thinning Garrison. Pale Sentry’s forces have been reduced twice as troops are redeployed to the Scarwall. Warden Ashford is holding the line with half the soldiers he needs. If another Undying comes, the fortress may not hold.
  • Something in the Dark. A soldier on night watch saw something in the northern darkness that walked upright and wore armor. Not shambling. Walking, with purpose, like a living person. It stood at the edge of the Ashwall’s glow for an hour, watching, then turned and walked back into the Wastes.
  • The Vigil’s Plea. Sera Vahn has formally requested emergency support, citing intelligence that suggests a large-scale coordinated incursion is imminent. Her requests are being routed through Cinder channels and never reaching the Hierarch. She is desperate enough to ask outsiders for help.
